Acupuncture - What is it?

Acupuncture is the oldest comprehensive medical system recorded. It dates back at least 2500 years and is currently used by ¼ of the world's population. It is a system based on body energetics. It focuses on balancing the body by smoothing the flow of energy through the meridians (energy channels).

Bio medicine is still seeking to explain how acupuncture works. There are many studies conducted through the NIH that have been able to measure things such as the difference in electricity in acupuncture points as compared to the rest of the body.

There are many different styles of acupuncture. They vary in background as well as in intensity of stimulation. Some different styles include five-element acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) style and Japanese acupuncture

What is it used for?

The World Health Organization now recognizes the efficacy of acupuncture for over 40 common disorders.

  • Ear, Nose and Throat Disorders: Toothaches, earaches, sinusitis, rhinitis laryngitis
  • Respiratory Disorders: Colds & Flu, bronchitis, asthma, allergies, emphysema.
  • Gastrointestinal Disorders: Food allergies, nausea, indigestions, diarrhea, constipation, ulcers, colitits.
  • Circulatory Disorders: Hypertension, high cholesterol, arteriosclerosis, angina pectoris.
  • Urogenital Disorders: Cystitis, stress incontinence, neurogenic bladder, prostatitis, prostatic hypertrophy.
  • Gynecological Disorders: Menstrual irregularity, endometriosis, PMS, infertility, menopausal syndrome.
  • Musculoskeletal Disorders: Tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, TMD, sciatica, low back pain, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia
  • Psychoemotional & Neurological Disorders: Depression, anxiety, insomnia, headache, migraine, trigeminal neuralgia, intercostals neuralgia, post-stroke paralysis, dizziness, tinnitus.
Acupuncture has been used for centuries to treat hundreds of other problems. The list above is just the disorders that the World Health Organization was able to review studies and recommend.

What can I expect from a treatment?

During the first treatment, your acupuncturist will go over your health history and discuss your current health. Because Oriental Medicine treats the whole person rather than focusing on symptoms, the initial interview may take up to an hour. You will find that you are asked many seemingly unrelated questions, but be assured that this is important in order to get a complete picture of your basic constitution.

Acupuncture needles are hair thin. They are so thin that you can actually fit nine acupuncture needles INSIDE one injection needle. Although you may feel a slight stick with some of the needles, the majority are usually pain free. Once a needle is in you can expect to feel a slight achy feeling as the point becomes active and energy comes to the area.

We use only single use, sterile needles. They are usually left in 20-45 minutes. The number of needles depends on the style of acupuncture as well as the condition being treated. A range from 2 needles up to 30 is common.

The first visit can take up to two hours to go over your history and answer any questions you may have. Follow-up treatments are usually under one hour. You will want to wear loose clothing.

Be sure to ask the acupuncturist any questions you may have and let your acupuncturist know if you are ever feeling uncomfortable. It's your treatment, so we want to be sure you are comfortable.
